Bringing the Revolution Home:
Pietro Sella's Mechanical Looms
This website explores the legacy of Pietro Sella, the visionary industrialist who, by introducing mechanical looms to the Biella region, revolutionised Italy's textile industry. The radical nature of his ideas is evident in their profound and disruptive impact, forcibly shifting the centuries-old tradition of wool work from the rhythmic pace of artisan craftsmanship to the regimented timetable of the factory. This digital narrative explores the pivotal moment of industrial transformation, examining its impact on the local community and its enduring significance as part of Italy's national cultural heritage.
Despite the closure of the renowned Sella Woollen Mills, the Fondazione Sella (https://www.fondazionesella.org/) in Biella has taken on the responsibility for preserving its legacy. This institution houses an extraordinary archive of letters, documents, and photographs, constituting a precious resource for scholars and a vital testament to the birth of Italian industry, which this project is privileged to draw upon.
